Making elephant toothpaste is so much fun. Firstly we PREDICTED what might happen and then we OBSERVED the chemical reaction as the ‘toothpaste’ oozed up and out of the bottle.

This looks like it would stick to a magnet!

I wonder about the foil, should it stay in yes?

The preps were introduced to magnets, they had to PREDICT what objects would be attracted to a magnet.

After PREDICTING they tested each object with a magnet, there were some surprises. The pipe cleaner, which was fuzzy on the outside, stuck to the magnet.

Finally each prep student had fun ‘driving’ a car around the racetrack by using a magnet under the table.

The preps learnt about ‘observing well’ by exploring outside.

Preps Investigating

As our unit on movement came to a close the Preps had their first chance to conduct a fair investigation. They began with rolling different shaped items down a smooth ramp to come to some conclusions about which shapes move the best and the different ways shapes move. Changing the shape of plasticine helped us to really explore the difference in the movement of circular shapes.

We then investigated how surfaces affect movement by rolling the same shape down a smooth ramp and a bumpy ramp. We measured the distance rolled using streamers. It was very hard to make sure we let go the ball the same way each time and that we were all being fair and not pushing the ball to get it to move on the bumpy ramp! Our streamers show that a ball moves further on a smooth ramp.

Moving Parts

After last weeks visit from the grader and tractor the preps used their writing and spelling skills to labelled photos. They had a go at writing new words such as hydraulics and sideways as they labelled the moving parts and used words to describe how they moved.

Sorting how toys move

Sorting how toys move

After a lesson where we discovered lots of different ways toys moved our next lesson was so EXCITING! We had a tractor and grader visit the school and after watching how they moved the preps took it in turns to climb into the cabin and operate the controls. They made the wheels on the grader turn left and right and pushed and pulled the lever to make the tractors ‘front scoop’ go up and down. What an exciting time! Thanks to Stewart and Mick (the drivers) and Andrea V. for the organisation.  TAP at work!

Did you realise we use many different body parts when we use playground equipment? To study the movement of our bodies the Prep students firstly thought about and drew what parts would move on some of the equipment, they then went out and videoed a partner moving on the equipment and finally after studying their videos added their new ‘thought’ ideas in a thought cloud.

On a car lots of things move; the wheels go around and ove sideways to go around corners, the steering wheel, the doors, the bonnet and the boot.

Using iPads the Preps went searching for things that move. Here are two photos of what they found. They also noted that the hands on the classroom clock move, flowers and the flag move in the wind, a football rolls along the ground, the taps move around and the gates open and shut.

Groovy Moves

The Preps had a lot of fun exploring the different movements we can make. They displayed some groovy dance moves during musical statues and had fun mirroring the movements of each other. They discovered that some movements we have to think about, some movements we do easily and some movements we do in response to outside triggers (eg. jumping at a fright).

Shelter, food, water and air

The Preps finished their science unit for Term 3 ‘Staying Alive’ with a visual representation of the things we need to stay alive. Each group created a SHELTER, shared a plate of FOOD, drank some WATER and blew up a balloon with lots of AIR!
