Ready to heat at the same time!

The 1/2 classes conducted their first fair test by comparing which chocolate melts quicker, white or dark? We had to focus on keeping lots of things the same – the same size chocolate bud, the same way to heat it (it was a lovely hot day!), starting the heating at the same time, holding the plastic bags in the same way (no cheating allowed, it had to be fair!). They all did a magnificent job and we discovered that white chocolate melts quicker than dark chocolate.

Heating and cooling

IMG_1521 IMG_1522 IMG_1538Mmmm hot popcorn smells so delicious! The 1/2 classes exercised great control to use their science observational skills to note the changes that occured after popcorn has been cooked. They compared small,  hard, yellow popcorn kernels to the fluffy, soft, white popcorn that emerged from the microwave. They also changed round, hard chocolate buttons to squishy, soft chocolate mush by heating the button (in a plastic bag) between their hands. They were rewarded for their excellent skills with some fluffy popcorn to share…Yumm!!

Sequencing cards for spaghetti.

After exploring the properties of cooked spaghetti the Year 1 / 2 classes investigated uncooked spaghetti. By building spaghetti towers they identified lots of differences between cooked and uncooked spaghetti. It is hard, thin, solid, has little flexibility and breaks easily but will make tall towers when handled carefully! They also recognised that once cooked spaghetti can not go back to how it began before cooking.

Spaghetti changes

IMG_1390The year 1/2 students are increasing their vocabulary as they create long descriptive lists to describe different objects. This week they looked at the properties and characteristics of COOKED spaghetti. Heat from hot water had caused the change to the spaghetti. The best thing about cooked spaghetti is that you can create pictures using it and you don’t need any glue! See if you can find the descriptive words in the spaghetti pictures.

What was it like before?

The Year 1/2’s put their thinking caps on to solve the mystery of what the warm ‘icy pole’ was like before hand. After using ‘THINK, PAIR, SHARE’ they were able to play ‘Spot the Difference’ between a frozen icy pole and a melted icy pole. They came up with a vast amount of descriptive words and discussed issues such as ‘How long did it take the icy pole to melt?’ and ‘How did it melt?’

Changes on the Farm

Today the Year 1/2 classes visited Doolan’s farm to learn about changes that have happened over time. We found out that things change on the farm according to the seasons. The calves are born in spring and autumn, hay is made in summer, silage starts growing in spring and the Pivot doesn’t need to be used in winter. There have also been changes over longer periods of time. Many years ago the land was covered in trees, then they were removed to put the cows on the land and now new trees are being planted. People used to milk the cows by hand, then they used a herringbone dairy and now they have a large rotary dairy. We had a fantastic day on the farm!

As part of their unit ‘Up, Down and all around’ the Yr 1/2 classes have created a class mini garden. They will be observing their garden over the term, taking photos and recording the changes that appear. They are conducting an experiment, as the only thing they are doing to their garden is watering it.

Changes! Up, Down and all around

In Yr 1/2 students are investigating changes in the environment that happen over a short time or a longer time. This week they headed out to compare the same environment to photos taken two weeks ago. Through careful observation they noticed changes in both the natural environment and changes caused by people.

Pond Habitat

This week the  1 / 2  students were able to explore pond habitat as part of their learning about habitats. Using the large microscope they saw the structure of slime and found  exciting moving things like microscopic worms, protozoa, insect larvae and hydra. Each class saw something different under the microscope and then used their skills at drawing scientific diagrams to record what they saw. Even under the microscope some things were so small that students described them as ‘full stops!’
