Scientific Drawings

The Year 1 / 2 students have been focusing on drawing accurate representations of the small animals they have been investigating. This week they were given some more ‘exotic’ small animals and firstly drew them and then compared them to ants, recording what was the same and what was different.

Up close and personal with worms, snails and ants.

The 1/2 students have been examining worms, snails and ants using magnifying glasses. With gloved hands they have carefully explored the features of the little animals and watched how they move around and eat. They are getting very good at drawing accurate diagrams to show the features of each creature. In the classrooms they have created wonderful homes for each different type of creature to watch what happens over time. In the snail shack the cuttlefish is slowly disappearing!

Searching for little animals

The Year 1 and 2’s have begun their Schoolyard Safari. There was lots of excitement as we headed out to the oval on a quest for tiny animals. Students carefully looked inside their hoops to find ants, crickets, slugs, slaters, snails and worms. They were very careful to place the animals back where they found them.

Forces writing

In Grades 1 and 2 the students have been exploring ‘push and pull’ forces on different objects. They placed many items in buckets of water, observed what happened and thought about what push or pull forces were involved.

Marvellous Minibeasts

Lots of incredible scientists and science related beings took over the 5-8 room on Wednesday to explore ‘Marvellous Minibeasts’. The Year 1/2 students used their developing observation skills to watch and then draw a scientific diagram of their own minibeast. Magnifying glasses were used to observe the fine detail and we finished by looking at worms, snails and beetles under the digital microscope.

Later in the day each class came to the science room for an introductory lesson with Mr Mottram on their new science topic, FORCES.
