Investigating melting chocolate

As part of their science unit ‘Melting Moments’ the Yr 3s carried out an investigation into whether shape affected the time it took for chocolate to melt. They practised the science skill ‘conducting a fair test’ by making sure the temperature of the warm water in each tub was the same, they had the same amount of chocolate and the same brand of chocolate. They came to a common understanding of what would determine melting and then used their iPads to record the time.

Mystery Melted Materials

The Year 3s turned into science detectives and used their observation skills to work out what some mysterious melted objects were. They observed what the objects….. looked like, felt like, smelt like and sounded like. They used many descriptive words and finally discovered they originally were plastic spoons and birthday candles! We discussed what makes some things melt. Most students think heat is involved. We will explore further next week!

Elastic Frogs

To follow up from their ‘Elastic Energy’ science launch the Year 3 classes visited the science room for the first time this week. They created jumping frogs using the potential energy of a stretched elastic band.

Click on the link to hear an explanation of how the frogs jump.         IMG_0295

Year 3 – Visual representation of the elasticity of lolly snakes

Careful measurement happening during elasticity science.

Careful measurement happening during elasticity science.

On our science launch day for the Grade 3s they measured the elasticity of lolly snakes. They then had to show their observations through drawings or the use of a table. Here are some of their observations:
