BioCats Posters

The Year 5 students visited BioCats again this year and learnt so much maths and science through a varietyIMG_3252 IMG_3253 IMG_3254 IMG_3255 IMG_3266 IMG_3267 of football activities. These are some of the posters they created to show their learning after their visit.

The year 5 students finished off our unit on light by firstly investigating the variation in the height of a shadow as the light moved closer to the object. They drew graphs to show the change in height. They then used the light boxes in the secondary science lab to further explore light travelling in rays. Some very creative ray diagrams were drawn to show the path of light as it was reflected and passed through prisms.

Light refraction

We explored light in the dark again this week! By creating lines of light we found that light through a plastic cup goes straight but through a cup with water it changes direction (refraction).

Transparent, translucent and opaque

IMG_1518Students in Year 5 conducted an investigation into how much light is let through different materials. This was all part of understanding the properties of different materials and being able to categorise them as transparent, translucent or opaque.

Directing light

IMG_1434 IMG_1433 IMG_1445M1 photo M2 photoWe had a challenge in class this week. The Year 5 students had to direct the light rays from a torch to go around a box. They used the property of shiny objects to reflect the light and direct the path of the light to go around a box. They are improving their ability to draw ray diagrams to show the path of the light.

Ray Diagrams

In Year 5 we have begun the light journey by drawing ray diagrams. We explored 3 things about light this week.

1. You need light to see

2. Light travels in straight lines

3. Shadows are caused when light is blocked

POE – States of Matter

The Year 5s  finished their unit “What’s the Matter?” with different experimental stations related to changes in the states of matter. They used the strategy POE: predict, observe and explain. For each experiment they predicted what they thought might happen, made observations, drew annotated diagrams and linked their knowledge about the properties of matter to think about explanations.

Solids and Gases

The year 5s have been exploring the properties of solids and gases. Firstly they conducted tests on different solids to determine the properties of solids. Then they conducted an experiment finding that the tissue in the bottom of the cup stayed dry when the cup was placed upside down in a bucket of water. Using this evidence they could make the claim that air takes up space.

Viscosity

The year 5s continued their investigations into the properties of liquids this week. They conducted their first ‘fair test’ using four different liquids to find out about the property viscosity.
